A fuel oil purifier is one of the most critical pieces of machinery on any vessel and one of the most overlooked until it fails. When a purifier goes down at sea, the consequences are immediate: contaminated fuel reaching the main engine, unplanned downtime, and the risk of serious machinery damage.

At Marine and Industrial Solutions LLC (MI Solutions), our workshop team receives fuel oil purifiers and MDO separators for complete overhaul and recalibration on a regular basis. This guide covers exactly what a full purifier service involves, the warning signs that a service is overdue, and how our marine mechanical engineers in Dubai restore purifiers to full OEM-standard performance.

Whether you operate an HFO separator, an MDO purifier, or a lube oil centrifuge this is what a proper workshop overhaul looks like.

What Is a Fuel Oil Purifier and Why Does It Matter?

A fuel oil purifier also called a centrifugal separator removes water, sludge, and solid contaminants from fuel oil before it reaches the engine. Operating at high rotational speeds, the bowl assembly spins fuel at several thousand RPM, using centrifugal force to separate contaminants by density.

On most commercial vessels, purifiers operate continuously 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The result is exceptional mechanical wear on the bowl, spindle, disc stack, and bearings over time. A purifier that is not serviced on schedule will gradually lose separation efficiency, leading to contaminated fuel reaching the engine injection system.

The consequences range from increased engine wear and injector fouling to catastrophic engine failure and port state control deficiencies if the vessel is found operating with ineffective fuel treatment.

Common purifier brands serviced by MI Solutions include Alfa Laval, Mitsubishi Selfjector, Westfalia / GEA, Wartsila, and all equivalent OEM types.

Warning Signs Your Purifier Needs a Workshop Overhaul

Do not wait for a breakdown. These are the indicators that a full service is overdue:

  • Excessive vibration during operation bowl imbalance or worn bearings
  • Unusual noise from the gear unit or spindle assembly
  • Reduced separation efficiency water or sludge passing through to the day tank
  • Frequent or irregular sludge discharge indicating disc stack fouling or bowl erosion
  • Overheating of the gear casing or motor
  • Oil leaks from the bowl or vertical shaft area
  • Alarm activations high vibration, low speed, or sludge tank overfill
  • Exceeding the manufacturer’s recommended running hours without service

Our Complete Fuel Oil Purifier Service Process

MI Solutions follows a structured, OEM-referenced workshop process on every purifier overhaul. Here is what that looks like in practice:

Step 1

Receipt, Initial Assessment & Disassembly

When the purifier arrives at our workshop, our technicians carry out an initial condition assessment before any disassembly begins. Running history, reported symptoms, and the manufacturer’s service manual are reviewed. The unit is then fully dismantled bowl assembly, disc stack, vertical spindle, horizontal shaft, gear unit, frame, and all ancillaries with each component laid out and catalogued.

All parts are cleaned, degreased, and prepared for dimensional inspection. Our marine mechanical workshop in Dubai operates with full access to OEM service manuals and tolerance tables for all major purifier brands.

Step 2

Bore Clearance & Dimensional Checks

The bowl body, lock ring, and distributor are measured for bore clearance against OEM specifications. Worn or corroded bore surfaces are identified and assessed for serviceability. Where bore dimensions are outside acceptable tolerance, components are flagged for replacement with OEM or class-approved equivalents.

The disc stack is inspected for erosion, warping, fouling deposits, and crack initiation. Disc stack length is measured and compared against the specified stack length a critical check, as incorrect disc stack compression directly affects separation efficiency and bowl balance. All discs outside specification are replaced as a set.

Step 3

Spindle Alignment & TIR Checks

The vertical spindle is one of the most precision-critical components in the purifier assembly. Our technicians carry out Total Indicator Runout (TIR) checks on the spindle to confirm concentricity and detect any bend or wear that would cause bowl vibration at operating speed.

Spindle alignment is verified against OEM tolerances. Where runout exceeds the acceptable limit, the spindle is either straightened, precision-ground, or replaced. Bearing journals are checked for wear, scoring, and surface finish and all bearings are replaced as a matter of course during major overhaul, regardless of apparent condition.

The horizontal shaft, worm gear, and friction clutch are similarly inspected and measured. Our precision machine shop in Dubai is available for in-house shaft repair, grinding, or component manufacture where OEM spares are unavailable or on extended lead time.

Step 4

Bowl Reassembly & Balance Verification

With all components inspected, measured, and replaced as required, the bowl assembly is rebuilt to OEM specification. The disc stack is assembled with correct spacers, the gravity disc is selected for the correct fuel density, and the bowl is closed and torqued to the manufacturer’s specified values.

Bowl balance is verified prior to reassembly into the frame. An out-of-balance bowl spinning at operating RPM generates vibration that rapidly accelerates bearing wear and risks catastrophic failure. Our technicians do not skip this step it is a fundamental part of every overhaul.

All O-rings, seals, gaskets, and sliding bowl parts are replaced with new OEM-specification components.

Step 5

Full Assembly, Run Test & Calibration

The purifier is reassembled into the frame, with the gear unit, motor coupling, and control system reconnected. The unit is run on the workshop test bench, brought up to operating speed, and monitored for vibration, temperature, noise, and oil pressure through the full operating cycle.

Sludge discharge timing is tested and adjusted. Operating water flow rates are calibrated. The control system whether pneumatic, hydraulic, or electronic is tested through complete automatic and manual cycles to confirm correct sequence operation.

Where the purifier control system requires automation or PLC diagnostics, our marine automation team in Dubai supports with integrated system testing.

Step 6

Service Report, Parts Record & Return to Vessel

On completion of testing, our workshop issues a full service report detailing all measurements recorded, components replaced, parts batch numbers, test results, and any observations for the vessel’s engineers. This documentation supports class society records and planned maintenance system (PMS) updates.

Where marine spare parts are required for the installation gaskets, operating water valves, control tubing, or instrumentation our spare parts team can supply direct to port alongside the overhauled unit.
