When a vessel’s hydraulic systems fail, every hour of downtime counts. At MI Solutions, our onboard hydraulics team was recently deployed to CARENA Abidjan Port, Côte d’Ivoire, to carry out a comprehensive hydraulic repair and commissioning project — restoring three critical ship systems to full operational status. This article outlines exactly what that scope involved and the standard our marine hydraulic repair team applies to every onboard project across Africa.
Whether the requirement is an emergency repair, a survey deficiency, or a scheduled overhaul during port stay — this is what a proper hydraulic restoration looks like, from pipeline renewal to full performance testing.
Project Scope at a Glance
The full hydraulic repair and commissioning scope at CARENA Abidjan covered three critical ship systems, delivered by MI Solutions’ in-house onboard team:
Anchor Windlass Overhaul
Watertight Door System Restoration
VRCS System Overhaul
Motor & Pump Overhaul
Accumulator Servicing
Full Functional & Performance Testing

The Repair Scope — System by System
MI Solutions executed the Abidjan hydraulic project across three vessel systems, each requiring individual diagnosis, overhaul, and functional verification before sign-off. Every phase was managed by MI Solutions’ in-house team — one point of contact from mobilisation to completion.
System 1
Anchor Windlass — Hydraulic OverhaulThe anchor windlass is one of the most operationally critical deck systems onboard. A hydraulic failure here directly impacts the vessel’s ability to anchor safely. MI Solutions carried out a complete renewal of the hydraulic pipeline and brake linings, restoring the system’s pressure circuit and mechanical braking function to full specification. Motors, pumps, and accumulators were fully overhauled — components inspected, worn parts replaced, and reassembled to manufacturer tolerances. The system was pressure tested and functionally verified before being returned to service. Replacement components were sourced through MI Solutions’ marine spare parts supply team to minimise vessel downtime. |
System 2
Watertight Door System — Full RestorationWatertight door systems are safety-critical — their hydraulic integrity is a class and flag state requirement. Degraded cylinders, failed accumulators, or non-functional hand pumps put vessel compliance and crew safety at risk. MI Solutions carried out a comprehensive overhaul of the entire watertight door hydraulic circuit onboard. Cylinders were overhauled and resealed. Accumulators were serviced and nitrogen pre-charged to the correct system pressure. Hand pumps were overhauled and directional control valves (DCVs) inspected, cleaned, and verified for correct operation. The complete system was functionally tested across all door positions before sign-off. MI Solutions’ marine hydraulic repair specialists managed the full scope onboard without subcontracting. |
System 3
VRCS System — Actuator & Accumulator OverhaulThe Variable Remote Control System (VRCS) relies on precise hydraulic actuation to function correctly. Worn actuators, degraded accumulators, and failing pressure switches introduce operational unreliability and risk. MI Solutions carried out a targeted overhaul of the VRCS hydraulic components — restoring the system’s response and control accuracy. Actuators and accumulators were fully overhauled. Pressure switches were replaced with new units, and hydraulic pumps replaced to restore the system’s flow and pressure delivery. All work was completed and functionally tested before handover. Replacement components were sourced through MI Solutions’ spare parts supply team in the UAE, ensuring correct specification parts reached the vessel at Abidjan without delay. |
Completion
Functional Testing & Performance VerificationOn completion of all three system overhauls, MI Solutions conducted full functional and performance checks across the anchor windlass, watertight door system, and VRCS — all passing to the required operational standard before handover. The project was delivered by MI Solutions’ onboard team with no subcontracting, no delays waiting for third-party support, and full documentation handed over to the vessel. This is the standard MI Solutions applies to every hydraulic repair and commissioning project across Africa and the Middle East. |
