A vessel’s inert gas system is only as reliable as the piping, cabinet, and valves that carry and control it. At MI Solutions, our onboard team recently completed a full N2 padding and purging system installation on an offshore support vessel, from feasibility study through to pressure testing and ABS class approval, delivered in 30 days. This article breaks down the commissioning process and the standard our marine mechanical service team applies to every inert gas system job.

From the first piping model to the final pressure hold, this is what a properly commissioned N2 system looks like when class approval and vessel safety are on the line.

Job Parameters at a Glance

The N2 padding and purging system was commissioned on an offshore support vessel, delivered end-to-end by MI Solutions’ in-house onboard team:

Vessel Type: Offshore Support Vessel
Timeline: Fully Commissioned in 30 Days
Test Result: 6.5-Hour Hold at 9.5 Bar, Zero Leaks
Certification: ABS Class Approval Obtained

The Commissioning Process, Phase by Phase

MI Solutions executed the N2 padding and purging system commissioning in four stages, each managed by our in-house onboard team with one point of contact from design through to handover.

Phase 1

Feasibility Study & 3D Piping Model

Before any fabrication began, MI Solutions’ engineering team carried out a full feasibility study for the nitrogen inerting system, mapping routing constraints and integration points against the vessel’s existing deck layout.

A 3D piping model and fabrication-ready spool drawings were then developed, giving the fabrication team an exact, class-ready blueprint before a single pipe was cut.

Phase 2

Piping Fabrication & Installation

Working from the approved spool drawings, MI Solutions’ fabrication team cut, fitted, and welded the nitrogen piping runs, then installed them across multiple deck sections in line with the 3D model.

Each run was checked against the design for correct routing, support, and clearance before moving on to cabinet and valve integration.

Phase 3

Cabinet Build & Valve Integration

A custom-built N2 cylinder cabinet was fabricated with structural reinforcement and ventilation, giving the system a secure, properly vented home on deck.

Full valve and fitting integration followed, including pressure relief valves, ball valves, needle valves, and pressure indicators, each connected and set to specification.

Phase 4

Pressure Testing & Commissioning

The completed system was put through a 6.5-hour pressure hold at 9.5 bar, confirming zero leaks across every joint, valve, and connection point.

With the hold test passed, the system was formally commissioned and submitted for class review, resulting in ABS approval for the completed installation.

The Result

Class-Approved N2 System, Ready for Service

From feasibility study to final commissioning, the N2 padding and purging system was designed, fabricated, installed, and tested without incident, holding 9.5 bar for 6.5 hours with zero leaks.

Delivered in 30 days with 100% in-house skills and full ABS class approval, this is the standard MI Solutions applies to every inert gas and piping system job across Africa and the Middle East.
